Japandi

The origins of this style date back to the 19th century, when Danish designers began traveling the world in search of inspiration. Thanks to its Japanese roots, Japandi places strong emphasis on functionality and optimal space organization. Influenced by the ancient Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi, it embraces slow living, contentment, and simplicity. From Scandinavian design, it inherits the cozy and inviting hygge feeling.

Both styles are grounded in similar principles, drawn to clean, minimalist forms and natural materials such as stone and wood. This shared foundation gave rise to a unique and harmonious fusion. Japandi is all about neutral tones, rich textures, and natural elements. Light-toned natural materials like rattan, bamboo, cotton, and hemp play a central role in the Japanese aesthetic, complemented by wood, which is key in both “parent styles.”

While Scandinavian pieces typically feature clean and straight lines, Japanese design often incorporates stained wood and more curved furniture forms. In Japandi interiors, mixing and matching shapes is not only allowed but encouraged, resulting in a balanced and serene space.
